The Terra Tractor: JDM 1991 Mitsubishi Pajero XP

This is not a new-to-us vehicle. We’ve had our '91 Mitsubishi Pajero XP for nearly eight years. Here is a bit I wrote about it for our website.

Cliff Notes:

  • JDM
  • 4D56T turbodiesel
  • 5MT (V5MT1, one of my favorite manuals)
  • First year of the Gen 2 Pajero
  • Cranked up torsion bars up front, LWB Montero rear springs
  • Rancho RS9000XL shocks all around
  • 265/85R16 BFGoodrich KM3 tires
  • 16x7.5 fifteen52 Analog wheels
  • ARB bumper from Australia
  • WARN M8-S winch
  • Lightforce Genesis lights
  • Custom rock sliders
  • Long Range Automotive aux fuel tank
  • Rhino Rack roof rack
  • Webasto Thermo Top Evo Coolant Heater
  • sheel-mann Vario F heated seats
  • JW Speaker LED headlights
  • Custom 2.5" exhaust with resonator
  • ARB 2.0 awning

This rig has been up to the Arctic Ocean … in the winter and parts of Alaska. It’s been in the sand, the snow, the ice, and the mud all over the Pacific Northwest and up through Canada.

Every time I drive it, I’m impressed at how well-sorted it is. Do I wish it were faster? Kinda. But it’s been dead-nuts reliable, and after 35 years, is still mostly rattle-free. This was our second Pajero, but sometimes I wonder if this will be a “forever 4WD.” It’s just so well sorted!

I freaking love the Terra Tractor.

Also love those wheels. Definitely top of my list for some time.
